Location Sound Recordist — South Coast UK

Location sound recordist setting up on a commercial shoot in Hampshire

I'm Steve, a freelance production sound mixer and recordist based on the south coast of England, recording location sound for creative commercials, branded content, documentary and corporate films across the UK and Europe.

Producers book me for clean dialogue and a calm pair of hands on set. My background in camera and post means I understand where sound sits in the wider process, allowing me to collaborate closely with directors, DOPs, and producers while keeping sound focused, unobtrusive, and production-aware.

Common questions

Where are you based, and how far do you travel?

The south coast of England, just outside Portsmouth. I work regularly across the rest of the UK and into Europe. Travel and accommodation are quoted per job and Carnets can be supplied.

How many wireless channels can you run?

3 channels of Sennheiser G4 as standard, plus a boom, into a six-track Sound Devices MixPre-6 II. If a job needs more than that, I'll bring in additional kit and tell you what it adds before the day.

Do you supply timecode?

Yes, I use the Tentacle Sync E units, jam-synced at the top of the day. Multi-camera and dual-system audio can be synced up in post, whilst keeping operators camera footprint small.

What do you deliver at the end of a shoot day?

32-bit float Poly WAV files with a mixdown track plus isolated tracks, named to your convention, handed over on set or uploaded the same evening. Full sound reports always supplied with notes from each take. Always available to talk through any decisions in the post process.

Can you shoot and record sound on the same job?

On the right job, yes, usually single-camera interview setups where a lean crew is an advantage. It isn't right for everything, and I'll say so if a project requires multiple roles.

let’s talk about your project

Tell me the dates, the location and roughly what you're shooting, and I'll come back with availability and a quote.
